SCOTUS Ruling: Affirmative Action Community Conversation, Part II

While most of the attention of the Supreme Court’s ruling on affirmative action centers on issues of admission policy and practice, important issues in those cases may bear on the continuing role of race and ethnicity in other areas including financial aid and scholarships. Some states have banned affirmative action for years, but colleges across the country will face a dramatically different admissions landscape this fall.

This community conversation will discuss how educational institutions, both private and public, will now navigate the admissions process and the alternative ways they will work to maintain racial equity and cultivate a climate of inclusion for their campus.

  • President Gerald Turner, Southern Methodist University
  • President Michael Sorrell, Paul Quinn College
  • President Bob Mong, University of North Texas at Dallas
  • Moderator: Vicki Blanton, Dallas Bar Association

At the event, panelists will cover the following:

  • Discussion on the details of the SCOTUS ruling, what led to it, and the legal implications
  • Address the Texas-specific DEI legislation banning diversity, equity and inclusion programs at public universities
  • Focus on innovative strategies colleges and universities are using to diversify their campuses including adversity scores, admission essay, socioeconomic-based affirmative action and percentage plans
  • Discussion how college admissions may change because of this ruling and the effects on students applying to colleges
  • Discussion on the broader implications of the ruling on the pursuit of racial equity in higher education.

Join us to hear from college and university leaders as we all work to understand the important role affirmative action has played in ensuring a diverse higher education community and seek answers on where do we go from here.
