June 2021

Message from Project Unity Founder, Richie Butler

The Dichotomy of Juneteenth

I grew up in Austin, TX where Juneteenth was an annual community wide celebration for African Americans. People gathered to remember, celebrate and in the words of Jesse Jackson, “keep hope alive”. Music, food, parades and recreational activities filled the day. No matter what day of the week the 19th of June fell on it was celebrated as the “unofficial” holiday for the black community.

Now that I am older and wiser I understand why the day is so important to African Americans and why it should be for all Americans. Juneteenth reflects the racial dichotomy of America. Juneteenth recognizes the end of slavery, and moreover, it is considered the longest running holiday for African Americans. The irony of this holiday is that Abraham Lincoln signed legislation in 1863 to end slavery, but somehow it took over two years for freedom to arrive in Texas. Two years…how many lives could have been changed or spared if the word had arrived on time. But it wasn’t until June 19, (Juneteenth) 1865 when federal troops landed in Galveston, Texas to take control of the state to ensure that those enslaved were freed. The Dichotomy of Juneteenth: why did it take two years to enforce freedom?

My Austin roots remind me that despite the dichotomy of Juneteenth we must celebrate freedom and learn from its contradiction so that we are not subject to repeat its failures.

Featuring Our Facilitators!

Facilitators are the heart and soul of our Together We Dine program. They volunteer their time 2-3 times a week helping to navigate safe conversations on race. They do this heart felt work because it matters so much to each of them. Let us introduce you to them and learn why they volunteer.
  • Judge Audrey Moorehead, facilitator since 2017
I sincerely believe in the mission of TWD and want to make a meaningful contribution.  My biggest take away is how important it is to really listen as people speak their truth about race, equality and social justice.  I have been doing this a while - some years, not sure how many, but I do remember when there was food! I teach and speak on this issue and issues tangentially related to race relations and every single time I facilitate; I learn something about me, I identify an area of personal growth and I have new friends and the relationships I already had gained an unexpected depth.
  • Anne Edwards, Retired, facilitator since 2019
I am a part of TWD because I believe that its mission of "what unites us is bigger than what divides us" is needed in our country right now. Being a facilitator has been an extremely important part of my own journey of listening to and learning from people as they share their unique stories and experiences in the area of race relations. Our experiences make us who we are and I grow personally from hearing the myriad of perspectives of each Dine participant. Learning to listen to one another's stories and perhaps seeing situations from a different perspective creates a sense of empathy that can go a long way in our fractious world. The Dines give us opportunities to listen and learn from each other and, to me, that is a huge take-away and perhaps the first step in bridging race relations. I am thankful for TWD as it creates a space for the sharing of thoughts about issues that are so important, but are not often discussed.
  • Kyle Ogden, President & CEO, Thanks-Giving Foundation, facilitator since 2020
I volunteer because I enjoy facilitating and witnessing the discovery that some participants experience.  The biggest takeaway so far is learning of the vast diversity of experiences in people’s lives.  Facilitating for TWD has exposed me to more personal stories, and has helped me develop empathy for all people regardless of where they are on their race relations journey.
  • Emily Martin, Retired, facilitator since 2021
I'm always looking for ways to help advance racial reconciliation and social justice. A lot of it just comes down to listening and learning from other people. I think I can be helpful in bringing people together to build bridges and raise up our community.
