Project Unity to Co-Host Interactive "Together We LearnTM" Event on Saturday to Instruct
High School Teens of Color How to Prevent Undesired Encounters with Law Enforcement during Traffic Stops
Educational walkthroughs led by members of the National Black Police Association, Dallas Chapter
(DALLAS, TX – July 25,2020) – WHAT: On Saturday, July 25, Dallas-based Project Unity, led by Richie Butler, Senior Pastor of St. Luke “Community” UMC, will host its “Together We Learn” educational program, providing teens in communities of color practical instruction on how to act and react during traffic and pedestrian stops to prevent undesired encounters with law enforcement, including unforced brutality and police shootings. This program has two key goals: to educate teens and equip teens about safety practicum to use during encounters with law enforcement and to collect information to support a study on perceptions of, and interactions with, law enforcement.
The event is co-hosted by the Dallas Chapter of the National Black Police Association with featured speakers Sgt. Sheldon Smith, Sr. Cpl. James Petty, and Sr. Cpl. Tracy Morgan of the Dallas Police Department. During the program, participants will learn what to do when stopped by police while in a vehicle or as a pedestrian, what to do when police knock on your door, and provide educational feedback through pre- and post-training surveys.

REGISTRATION DETAILS: To register, participants should email TogetherWeLearn@ProjectUnity.net by 9PM CT on Friday, July 24th with the registrant’s name, age, and email address. Confirmation emails and the Zoom information will be sent to the email address provided upon completion of a survey. Registrants or parents/guardians must complete a 5-minute anonymous pre-training survey and submit (parents must submit for those under 18 years old). Parents/guardians are invited to observe the training session.
This online training program is the kickoff of a regular series of such programs organized by Project Unity. A schedule for August and the Fall will be released shortly on www.projectunity.net.
